Marital status

The date that you and your spouse began living together
This is generally the date that either of the spouses expressed that the relationship was over. Spouses often consider this to be the date they “broke up,” despite possibly continuing to reside together under the same roof. Spouses may be separated despite ongoing shared living arrangements.

Is your spouse currently employed?

Required if you may need child or spousal support calculations. Unless you’re self-employed, your gross annual income (before taxes) can likely be found in line 15000 of your most recent income tax return or notice of assessment.

Important Information About The Law Portal's Virtual Legal Services

Our head office is located in downtown Vancouver, where you can attend to meet with our support staff or drop off documents. However, The Law Portal is primarily a “virtual law firm.” Our objective is to provide our clients across BC with affordable legal representation, which we accomplish by minimizing our overhead expenses and passing those savings on to you. When you retain a remote lawyer through The Law Portal, you will automatically receive a minimum 25% discount on your lawyer’s hourly rate. When you retain a local lawyer, you will receive a minimum 10% discount on your lawyer’s hourly rate.

Our lawyers specialize in resolving files amicably, quickly, and cost-effectively. Our goal is avoid court, which tends to exponentially increase legal fees and animosity in family files. However, there are times when court is unavoidable. We’re often able to appear in court remotely by MS Teams, and nearly all mediators and arbitrators offer their services over Zoom. If you retain a remote lawyer and you need your lawyer to travel (whether for in-person meetings, court, mediation, or arbitration) this can usually be arranged for a flat-fee, or at no cost to you by reducing your discount. Additional options are available, which we would be happy to discuss with you during your consultation.

Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or concerns about The Law Portal’s virtual legal services. We look forward to meeting you soon, whether in person or virtually.
